Guide

How long should a stream clip be?

In short: as long as the moment and not a second longer: start on the action and end on the payoff. The limits that matter: YouTube Shorts can be up to three minutes (YouTube help), Twitch clips up to 60 seconds and Kick clips 10 to 180 seconds. TikTok and Instagram allow longer videos; check the current limits in each app.

The limits

A simple rule for cutting

  1. Find the payoff: the line, the play, the reaction.
  2. Back up only as far as needed for a stranger to get it.
  3. Cut right after the payoff. The laugh, the "no way", then out.
  4. If it needs a long setup, it's either two clips or not a clip.

RipClip cuts each moment to the length it needs and you can trim any clip in the editor.

Questions.

What is the maximum length of a YouTube Short?

Three minutes, for square or vertical videos, per YouTube's help centre.

How long can a Kick clip be?

10 to 180 seconds, per Kick's help centre.

Should every clip be under a minute?

Not as a rule. Cut to the moment: some land in 15 seconds, some need a minute. Watch your own analytics to see what holds your viewers.
