How do I turn a long video into shorts?
Updated
In short: find the moments that make sense without the rest of the video, cut each one to the length it needs, reframe it to 9:16, caption every word, open on the strongest line, and spread the posts over days. A YouTube Short can run up to three minutes (YouTube help, read 18 October 2026), so most moments fit with room to spare. The slow part with a 1 to 4 hour video is finding the moments, which is where an AI clipper helps and where it can miss.
The workflow
- Get the file. Work from the original video, not a screen recording of it. For a stream, use the past broadcast or your recording. For a podcast or a YouTube video, use the file you exported.
- Find the standalone moments. A good short makes sense to someone who didn't watch the rest. Look for a question and its answer, a story with an ending, a joke with its punchline, a play with its reaction. Note the start and end time of each as you go.
- Cut each one to what it needs. Start on the moment, end right after the payoff. If it needs a long setup, it is two shorts or none. See how long a clip should be.
- Reframe to 9:16. A 16:9 frame has to be recomposed, not squeezed. Keep the speaker's face large; if there is a facecam and gameplay, decide whether to follow the face or split the screen. See vertical clips with a facecam.
- Add captions. Captions let people follow with the sound off, and long videos are mostly talk. Check the spelling of names and game terms. See word-by-word captions.
- Open on a hook. The first seconds decide whether anyone stays. Cut dead air and "so, anyway" from the front. If the best line comes late, start on it, then play the setup.
- Post across days. One long video holds many shorts. Spread them out instead of posting all at once, and look at your own numbers to learn when your viewers are around.
How long should each short be?
The only limit we cite is YouTube's: Shorts can be up to three minutes, and the video must be square or vertical (YouTube help, read 18 October 2026). Other platforms change their limits often: our video specs for every network page lists each one from the platform's own pages with the date we read it, and the app itself has the last word. Length is set by the moment, not by the limit. A 20-second payoff doesn't need padding to 60.
Doing it by hand
Manual work gives the best judgement and costs the most time. You have to watch or skim the whole video at least once, so a 3-hour stream costs at least a few hours before any editing. Tools that make it faster:
- A transcript. Search the text for the words you remember, or scan it for strong lines, instead of watching.
- Markers while you record. Streamers can note the time of a good moment as it happens; the notes become your shortlist.
- Chat and viewer clips. Moments people reacted to are often moments worth keeping, but they only cover what people noticed.
Using an AI clipper, honestly
An AI clipper reads the whole video for you and proposes cuts, which turns hours of scrubbing into a review. It works best on talk: podcasts, interviews, commentary, and streams where the streamer speaks through the action, because answers and stories have clear starts and ends.
It is weaker where little is said. A silent clutch play, a visual gag, a long quiet build to a big moment or a speedrun trick can carry no words to go on, so any AI clipper, RipClip included, can miss them or cut them badly. Treat the AI's list as a first cut. Skim the quiet stretches you know had something good in them, and add those clips by hand.
Either way, review what you post. Automatic picks are a draft; you know your audience.
What about a YouTube video?
To clip a YouTube video, you need the video file itself. If you made the video, export it from your editor or use your original recording. Only use videos you own or have permission to use. RipClip doesn't take YouTube links, so upload the file instead.
How to do it in RipClip
- Give RipClip the video: a Kick or Twitch past broadcast, highlight or clip link, a Google Drive, Dropbox or OneDrive share link, a direct link to a video file, or an upload (MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI or M4V).
- It reads the whole video and cuts the moments that stand on their own into 9:16 clips, framed on the speaker and captioned word by word. Clip length "Auto" is 20 to 45 seconds, or you choose. Presets can also remove filler words and pauses and add a hook-first version.
- Fix any cut in the editor. Delete words in the transcript to cut them, restyle captions, or trim a clip to the exact frame.
- Download the clips, or schedule them from one calendar.
Video length limits are 4 hours on Free and Creator, 8 on Pro and 12 on Studio. A 2-hour video uses 66 HU (Horizon Units) and the Free plan includes 110 HU a month. Editing and re-exporting cost no HU. Posting switches on platform by platform as each platform approves RipClip; until then, download your clips and post them yourself. Nothing posts unless you schedule it.
